The Life Journey of Wang Wei, the Poet-Bodhisattva
Wang Wei (701-761), courtesy name Mojie, hailed from Qixian, Shanxi. A poet, painter, and musician of the Tang Dynasty, he is known as the "Poet-Bodhisattva." Su Shi praised him: "In his poetry there are paintings; in his paintings there is poetry."
I. A Prodigy (701-721)
Born into the prestigious Taiyuan Wang clan, Wang Wei was a child genius skilled in music, calligraphy, and painting. He made his mark in Chang'an at fifteen and placed first in the imperial examination at twenty-one. His poem "Song of Youth" — "Fine wine at ten thousand coins a cup in Xinfeng, so many young gallants in Xianyang" — brims with youthful bravado.
II. Between Service and Retreat (721-744)
After a promising start, Wang Wei was demoted due to a minor scandal. Later, championed by Chancellor Zhang Jiuling, he returned to the capital as a censor. When Zhang was dismissed, Wang Wei grew disillusioned with politics and adopted a semi-retired lifestyle, purchasing the Wangchuan Villa near the Blue Mountains and composing poetry with his friend Pei Di.
III. The An Lushan Rebellion (755-758)
When rebellion erupted, Wang Wei was captured by the rebel forces. He took poison to feign illness and mutilated his face to avoid serving the usurpers, but was eventually forced to accept a nominal post. He secretly composed verses declaring his loyalty: "Ten thousand households grieve amidst the wild smoke — when shall the officials face the imperial court again?"
IV. The Wangchuan Years (758-761)
After the rebellion, Wang Wei was pardoned thanks to his brother Wang Jin's military contributions. In his final years, he devoted himself increasingly to Buddhism, living as a monk-like recluse at Wangchuan. His nature poetry reached sublime perfection: "Empty mountains, no one is seen — only the sound of voices is heard. Evening sunlight enters the deep forest, shining again upon the green moss."
V. Departure (761)
In 761, Wang Wei died at Wangchuan at the age of sixty-one. On his deathbed, he bid farewell to his brother and donated his villa to become a Buddhist temple. The "Poet-Bodhisattva" departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of luminous verse and painting.
