The Life Journey of Li Qingzhao, the Greatest Woman Poet

Li Qingzhao (1084-c.1155), art name Yi'an Jushi, was a native of Zhangqiu, Shandong. The foremost woman poet of the Song Dynasty and the greatest representative of the delicate (wanyue) school of ci poetry, she is hailed as "the most talented woman in all of history."

I. A Bookish Girlhood (1084-1101)

Born into a scholarly family — her father Li Gefei was a renowned academic and her mother came from a noble clan — Li Qingzhao showed extraordinary talent from a young age. In her famous poem "Like a Dream," she wrote: "I often recall the sunset at the creek pavilion, so drunk I couldn't find my way home," capturing the carefree joy of youth.

II. A Perfect Marriage (1101-1127)

In 1101, Li Qingzhao married Zhao Mingcheng, a student of antiquities. The couple shared a passion for collecting bronze inscriptions, ancient texts, and paintings. They named their study the "Hall of Return" and lived frugally to fund their collection. In "A Twig of Plum Blossom," she wrote: "Flowers fall of their own accord, water flows on its own — one kind of longing, idle sorrow in two places."

III. The Jingkang Catastrophe (1127-1129)

When the Jin invasion destroyed the Northern Song, Li Qingzhao and her husband fled south with fifteen carts of antiquities. Many treasures were lost during the chaotic journey. In 1129, Zhao Mingcheng died of illness en route to his new post. Devastated, Li Qingzhao composed the defiant lines: "In life, be a hero among men; in death, be a hero among ghosts."

IV. Turmoil and Divorce (1129-1132)

Widowed and alone, Li Qingzhao married Zhang Ruzhou in a moment of vulnerability. But Zhang had only wanted her collection and abused her. In an act of extraordinary courage, Li Qingzhao reported Zhang for exam fraud and divorced him, even though divorce meant she herself would face imprisonment. It was a scandalous act in her time.

V. The Twilight Years (1132-c.1155)

Li Qingzhao spent her final years wandering between various cities, her collection nearly destroyed. Looking back on all she had lost, she composed "Shengshengman" (Slow, Slow Tune): "Seeking, seeking — searching, searching — cold, cold — clear, clear — sorrowful, sorrowful, bitter, bitter, desolate, desolate." It remains the most heartbreaking opening in all of Chinese literature. She died in solitude around 1155.
