The Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties

1. General Introduction

The Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties refer to eight outstanding prose writers who led the Classical Prose Movement in ancient China, including two writers from the Tang Dynasty and six from the Song Dynasty. The title was officially named after Mao Kun compiled Selected Prose Works of Eight Masters of Tang and Song in the Ming Dynasty.

They abandoned the ornate, empty parallel prose popular for hundreds of years, and advocated the literary core idea of "writing to convey truth". Their works are rooted in real society and sincere emotions, reconstructing the creative standard of Chinese prose. Meanwhile, they created countless immortal ci poems, forming the core treasure of traditional Chinese classical literature.

2. Brief Introduction to Each Master

1. Han Yu (Tang Dynasty)
   The pioneer of the Classical Prose Movement, honored as the man who revived prose after eight declining dynasties. His writing is powerful and logical, with masterpieces On Teachers and On the Horse Talent.
2. Liu Zongyuan (Tang Dynasty)
   A close partner of Han Yu. He excels in landscape travel notes and fables. Famous works The Small Stone Pool and The Snake Catcher reflect social reality and inner feelings.
3. Ouyang Xiu (Song Dynasty)
   The literary leader of the Northern Song Dynasty, core figure of the Song Classical Prose Movement. His writing style is gentle and natural. He discovered and promoted Su family, Wang Anshi and Zeng Gong. His famous prose The Old Drunkard’s Pavilion is widely known.
4. Su Xun (Song Dynasty)
   Father of Su Shi and Su Zhe, the elder of "Three Sus". He started literary creation late in life, his political essays are rigorous and profound, focusing on social problems.
5. Su Shi (Su Dongpo, Song Dynasty)
   The most versatile master among the eight. He mastered poetry, ci, prose, calligraphy and painting. He is the representative of bold ci poetry. 6. Su Zhe (Song Dynasty)
   Younger brother of Su Shi. His prose is calm and moderate, and his ci poems express life aspirations through scenery.
7. Wang Anshi (Song Dynasty)
   A great statesman and litterateur of Northern Song. His articles are sharp and logical, with the vision of a reformer. Visiting Baochan Mountain integrates philosophy into travel notes.
8. Zeng Gong (Song Dynasty)
   Disciple of Ouyang Xiu. His language is concise and elegant, his writing neat and peaceful, with both literary and historical value.
