The Life Journey of Huangfu Mi, Father of Acupuncture

Huangfu Mi (215-282), styled Shi'an, the 'Master Xuanyan' of Anding Chaona, was the physician-scholar who fixed acupuncture forever. A truant till twenty, then a reader till paralysis took half his body — and out of his own sickness he compiled the 'A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion,' 349 points mapped, the oldest such work that survives. Seven imperial summons, seven refusals.

Timeline of the Journey

Born in Chaona of Anding (Pingliang), heir of a great Han house fallen quiet; adopted to an uncle, idle into his teens — the village called him a fool.
At twenty-five shamed by an aunt's gift of cloth into study: a hundred schools read, the pen-name 'Master Xuanyan' taken, and the first of many summons refused — 'I would rather farm.'
A trip east to Chang'an for rare books only — no office sought; the old capital's libraries feeding a private scholar's shelf.
Wind-paralysis, half his body dead; the sickbed became his second academy, medicine studied against his own pain.
On that bed, the 'A-B Classic of Acupuncture' completed in twelve books — 349 points, the first canon of the needle.
The Jin court removed to Luoyang and summoned him again; he stayed home — but sent his book to the Imperial Medical Office, that more healers might use it.
Even a crown-tutorship in the heir's household could not move him: 'long chained to grave illness, I cannot run errands.' The emperor let him keep his books.
Died at sixty-eight in Pingliang, the needles he canonized already traveling without him — the 'A-B Classic' still taught in every school of acupuncture.

'I had rather be one old farmer in the fields than a collar in the capital.' Huangfu Mi turned a paralytic's bed into the founding bench of Chinese acupuncture — and never once took an office.
