The Life Journey of Chu Guangxi, the Pastoral Master
Chu Guangxi (c. 706-763), of Yanling in Runzhou (Danyang, Jiangsu), was a leading pastoral poet of the High Tang. A jinshi of 726 who wearied of small county posts, he retired to the Zhongnan Mountains to live beside Wang Wei and write farm verse of the fields' real labour; trapped in fallen Chang'an during the An Lushan revolt, he was convicted of accepting rebel office and died in exile beyond the ranges.
Timeline of the Journey
Born at Yanling, old fief of the Sage of Yanling; the water country of the south — ferry landings, lotus skiffs — rooted itself in his verse.
Presenting poems along the Luoyang Way to the mighty — its great avenue 'straight as a hair,' its young lords ringing with jade.
Passed the jinshi in Chang'an in the same list as Cui Guofu and Qi Wuqian; his trial essay at the Secretariat made his name in the capital.
At Sishui below Hulao Pass he saw the peasants' toil at first hand, writing farm poems of dawn ploughing and oxen.
Resigning office he hid in the Zhongnan Mountains, chanting in turn with Wang Wei — ten 'Casual Compositions' exchanged — ranked with Wang and Meng.
Called south again to Anyi on the canal and Lake Sheyang, the water country woke his Jiangnan memories.
Passing Xinfeng below Mount Li, the old inn's new wine and the host's warmth washed the road's dust away.
When Chang'an fell he could not follow the emperor's flight; forced office under the rebels stained a clean name.
Convicted after the revolt, pardoned, banished beyond the ranges, he died in the miasmal south at about fifty-eight — the pastoral master mourned by all who wrote.
'The pool so clear the water seems shallow; the lotus stirs — fish scatter.' Chu Guangxi brought the farm's own labour and the river country's light into Tang pastoral poetry; the dynasty's collapse wrote his ending, but not his lines.
